The One Room Manifesto

Picture
The One Room Manifesto is a statement that outlines first, why the interior design profession needs to take a new approach to design and second, how we can design using the principles of sustainability as a starting point for the interior design concept.

This manifesto argues that designs greatest contribution to creating the transition from a wasteful, profit based system to a healthy, environmentally safe, restorative system, is to use design to change our collective mindset and use interior design to re-package and “sell” the concept of sustainability.

We can only maintain our levels of consumption by borrowing from our stock of non-renewable resources. Excessive carbon emissions are causing global warming, which will result in large areas of the planet becoming uninhabitable as a result of flooding and desertification. We know all this, but we dont seem to be able to change. We are being stupid.

Post Stupid Design is the idea that we can use our skills as designers to create a better, more exciting, more intelligent alternative to our current obsession with consuming throw-away objects.

We all want more value, higher quality and more satisfaction when we spend our money. Post Stupid Design is a way of acheiving it.
The name “One Room” refers both to the interior designs professions area of expertise and at the same time is a metaphor for the fact that we have only one small planet to support us.
The One Room Concept is an arguement, an invitation, and a business proposition to those who want to work towards creating a future built on cool ecology.
